BACK FROM THE WONDERLAND OF VEGAS

As you can see everything in Las Vegas is bigger than life. Here Lucette and Seth are dwarfed by a huge table and lamps. Having just returned from their buying trip with lots of new and exciting designs and some fabulous gemstones they are excited to share their experiences.

One in particular truly sparked their interest. An amazing neon blue tourmaline blew them away. Fortunately they were were able to bring it back with them. The stone has to be seen to be believed. It is clear, cut magnificently with the most amazing color. David is just itching to design a spectacular pendant/brooch with this stone as the centerpiece.

Though Seth and Lucette are not gamblers and never had a particular penchant for Las Vegas, it does seem to get better each year. The newer hotels are less glitzy and noisy. Some are even just a tad off the 'strip', which makes them that much more serene.

Visiting this show is fascinating. They love reconnecting with old friends and colleagues, but the best is seeing what's in the forefront of the jewelry world. It is very validating for us to see that once again BELENKY BROTHERS has their finger on the pulse of fashion and what's hot in the industry. Uniquely formed fine pearls seem to be drawing a lot of attention. Though difficult to find the natural, untreated ones are magnificent! Lucette proudly sports a strand herself and we have luckily been able to secure several others.

Also, difficult to obtain is unusually cut and fine large diamonds. The photo below shows Seth holding just such a rare and magnificent stone.

There is really so much to share. What we will try to do is send out an email with additional info to keep everyone up to date. Though Vegas is a lot of work and very exhausting, it is also highly exhilarating at the same time.

THE AMAZING PAULA CREVOSHAY!

Once again the amazing Paula Crevoshay has enthralled the Belenky Brothers' clients. She entertained us with a fascinating multimedia presentation. As a former actress this artist knew how to pull out all the stops.

In addition to her performance, she exhibited her newest collection. Her museum quality jewelry awes everyone. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, based on the exotic gemstones she selects. The vibrant colors and the goldsmithing of her work make a Crevoshay design a true collector's choice. Sorry to be getting so carried away when discussing Paula's jewelry, but once you see her work, you will understand.

Getting back to the event, it was beautifully attended and even David and Lucette's two year old granddaughter came to see Paula Crevoshay. Certainly if you ask them, I'm sure they'll tell you that little Riley is truly the most amazing gem of all.

WHY CELEBRATE VALENTINE'S DAY?

What is the origin of Valentine's Day? February 14 is Valentines Day, the day on which we celebrate and explore love in all it’s many ideals. One might wonder why would a day for lovers be created?

The story of Valentines Day begins during the height of the Roman Empire, which held a festival every February. This Lupercian Festival was held in honor of the God of Fertility. At this time young men would choose their mates. At the time marriage was a common occurrence, but when Claudius became Emperor he changed all of that. Fearing that men would refuse their duty to fight because they would not want to leave their wives behind, he outlawed all marriages. Young couples still fell in love though and still wished to marry and they took these desires to the Catholic Bishop Valentine who, believed strongly in love. He then took it upon himself and began to officiate over the marriages of many couples. When Claudius learned of this, he had Valentine arrested and sentenced to death. While languishing in jail, Valentine began exchanging letters with the jailer’s daughter and soon had fallen in love with her. The day he was to be beheaded, he wrote her one last note and signed it: ‘From Your Valentine’.

Now in the 21st century, Who should celebrate Valentine's Day? It seems to be a quandry upon which many have speculated. After all, if it's more of a "made-up" holiday, why bother? Is this another of the Hallmark creations?

There are probably several ways to view this holiday. One, of course is that it is merely a commercial situation and why honor it. Another, is to take February 14th, a date in the midst of the cold winter, and make it fun. Share your love and joy with others. Make the people you care about feel good. How wonderful to receive an unexpected gift or phone call or note. Think how you would feel to be the recipient of something so special.

Sure you can complain about the commercialism of this day, but in essence it is a wonderful break in the middle of these harsh wintry days to celebrate your love for another.

A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!

As promised here is a brief overview of our fabulous holiday party!

Though we kept a careful count of the RSVP's, many more guests attended than anticipated. Rather than this being problematic, it served to enhance the evening making it very exciting and a lot of fun! Everyone was ready to enjoy themselves and came with a an open mind and a willingness to try anything.

The incredible designer, Paula Crevoshay, started the evening by explaining her art background and its impact on her beautiful jewelry. As sculptors are often inspired by a large boulder or an unusually shaped piece of wood, Paula's inspiration comes from unique, exotic and spectacular gemstones. Each of her designs is one-of-a-kind, developed around a central stone. The brilliance and colors are truly breathtaking.

Our new artist, photographer Olivia Baranuevo, from Mexico, discussed her evocative new body of work entitled "The Ancient Mexicans". She shared her fascination with the enduring quality of the Aztecs and Mayans. Baranuevo has captured their strength and mystery in her etherial photographs.

Belenky Brothers wanted very much to share a joyous evening and allow our guests to feel a strong sense positivity. Certainly we are all confronted with the dismal nightly news. We wanted to present an alternative perspective. We chose to share with our friends, our love and belief in a new and prosperous future. Paula Crevoshay, felt similarly. Together we planned a short prayer and a chant. Each guest received a small votive candle, we darkened the room, and Paula's melifluous voice led the group in a life affirming approach. It was very moving. If the expressions on everyone's face were a sign of their level of serenity, then we know this small effort was highly successful.

The guests lingered into the night. It seemed no one wanted to leave. Unlike other evenings, even our staff seemed to want it all to continue.

For those who were unable to join us, we missed your presence. Please stop in and visit us before the holidays so we may wish you well and toast the new year.

Seminar Success!

Our final celebration seminar was a huge success! Susan Helmich, a master designer utilizing fine hand carved gemstones thrilled us all with her stories, motivation and phenomenal designs. Our guests were truly enthralled and lingered long after she finished bombarding her with many questions.

From our perspective, we found out that our devoted clients appreciated this format. They found they gained much and experienced the satisfaction of learning. Belenky Brothers has always believed that the educated consumer is our best customer. We take responsibility in trying to apprise our clients all the time. This seminar forum has taken us to a new level, a new dimension, by bringing the greatest masters in our country directly to our clients. We were delighted with the reactions and feedback we received from those who attended. It was immensely rewarding.

Hopefully we will be able to offer more of these forums. We will do our best. Please let us know if there is anything or anyone in particular you would want to hear from, learn, or experience.

TWO DOWN, ONE TO GO...

Instead of one big 'Grand Opening' party, Belenky Brothers decided to give something more back to our devoted clients. We chose to host a three part series of informative chats with some of the most noted people in the industry. The first was Claudia Kretchmer of Steven Kretchmer Designs. Claudia's gentle and intelligent style was not only highly informational but most beguiling.

We learned a great deal about what motivated Steven to create Polarium, his fabulous new alloy imbued with polarity. We were given insights into some of the newest and upcoming designs, and most of all we learned more about one of the greatest jewelry genius's this world has ever seen.

Claudia's approach, though completely different than her father's, is no less innovative. She brings to her designing an impressive background in astrophysics. Which as one might imagine is highly impressive.

Last week Michael O'Connor, the TV personality and renowned red carpet runway commentator shared with our audience some fascinating information about how to mix and match jewelry. Actually, I learned some neat new stuff, which I plan to share on an individual basis. His 'dish' about celebs was fun, what they own, what they wear and what they truly like. Another interesting fact he put forth was how men can wear jewelry in a most chic fashion. Most men are truly reluctant to wear anything but a ring or bracelet (maybe) or necklace. He actually pointed out how macho men could even wear a brooch with panache. Again, I'd love to share this with you, please feel free to ask.

Our guests lingered long after the talks enjoying the hors oeuvres and wine, and viewing the fantastic and impressive American Jewelry Design Council's Museum Collection.

Our LAST CHAT will be this Wednesday, August 27th at 6:30 . Speaking will be Susan Helmich, a master designer who utilizes some of the most exotic gemstones in the world, many of which are hand carved by the famous Munchsteiner family. She will share some secrets into buying and collecting colored gemstones. Don't miss this amazing designer's rare appearance.

DEFINITELY A "HOT" NIGHT!

They were all there! All the stars of the jewelry world gathered to celebrate three important events. The first was the twentieth anniversary of the AJDC (The American Jewelry Design Council), America's most prestigious jewelry design organization. The second was the release of the new art book "Brilliance". This gorgeous book illustrates the magnificence and the creativity of the Council's designers. And the third reason to celebrate is the official opening of Belenky Brothers' new location at 91 Grand Street in Soho.

The evening was a smashing success. Fabulous food, wonderful wine and champagne, A-list designers, paparazzi, TV cameras, reporters and all the major personalities in the jewelry industry. They mingled, ate, and gazed in awe at the newly mounted exhibition of the Museum Collection of the AJDC, at Belenky Brothers for one month.

It was great fun, but we must admit that it got a bit too stressful, since the contractors left only minutes before the guests arrived. Whew1 Life gets pretty hectic around here, but it sure is exciting!

Now we are gearing up for our series of three chats by some of the world's foremost jewelry people. This too, is in celebration of our move to Grand Street. You might say, this will be a "Grand" month for Belenky. One of our clients just called to say he'd seen the Office Max commercial on You Tube. We checked it out and had such fun reading the comments.
One of the responders spent the time to calculate the following?

"It would have been 396,000 pennies for the stated purchase price.if each person was able to count 200 pennies every minute it would take the two of them 16 1/2 hours to count them all!"

We could have been there all night.

"GOTCHA"

"GOTCHA!", now we truly understand what that means- - -what an experience!. Just the other day, Lucette a seasoned and sophisticated salesperson, had a most disarming and unusual experience. A young couple walked into the gallery asking to see engagement rings. Ah,nothing unusual so far. The young man was pulling a large roll on suitcase. Again, we have many tourists who come directly from the airport, specifically to purchase something from Belenky Brothers, therefore the large piece of luggage did not send up any red flags.

Lucette was pleasant and helpful. The young man told her the budget and style he preferred. He explained that the woman with him was his girlfriend's sister who was aiding him in his selection. They were both most affable. Very quickly the fellow selected a ring to his liking. In retrospect, Lucette later admitted, he made his selection a little too quickly.

While guiding them to a desk in order to finalize the transaction, Lucette offered to store his suitcase in a locked area. He adamantly rejected the offer. That was the first thing that triggered some suspicion. He very carefully laid down his suitcase right next to his chair. After a short discussion Lucette asked how he intended to pay for the ring. At that point he bent down and slowly with great deliberation, unzipped the suitcase, leaned down and pulled back the flap. As he did this he maintained a vigilant observance on Lucette's reaction. The contents of the suitcase was most shocking!

Filling the cavity of the luggage were thousands and thousands of. . .pennies. Yes, you read it correctly, pennies. The kind nobody even bothers to bend down to retrieve any more.

Lucette stared at the masses of coins that filled the black suitcase, and then began to giggle. "Do you mean you want to pay with these pennies?" she asked

"Will you take pennies in payment?"

"Uh, well, I guess so, after all it is legal tender. But I must admit this is the first time anyone has ever made such a request."

The young man continued to explain that after the first date with his girlfriend, he knew he was going to marry her and began saving pennies to buy a ring. His father had done the same thing and it meant so much to him. Lucette was touched by the sentiment and suggested he might want to take the pennies to a bank. But no, he wanted to use the pennies for a direct payment. She offered several other suggestions which he declined. Trying to help this young man, Lucette volunteered to work with them to count the pennies. As you can imagine, counting several thousand dollars in pennies is a most daunting task. After 45 minutes they had managed to count $15.00. At that rate they would be working throughout the night.

Seth then whispered to Lucette it was getting late and she should have them return another day since he had an appointment and had to close the gallery. The young man was profoundly disappointed and pleaded for us to keep all his money in exchange for the ring.

At that poing a peculiar thing happened. Several strange men with video cameras and microphones entered the gallery. They were followed by many more people. Then a charming man, we later learned was the director began explaining. It seemed that the entire episode was similar to a 'Candid Camera' commercial for a well known nation wide chain. Unbeknownst to Lucette, there were hidden cameras placed in the gallery and the two "customers" who were actually actors were wearing hidden cameras. The director loved the way the entire scene played out and even made Lucette a temporary member of the Screen Actor's Guild in order for her to get paid.

It was a fun experience for all. Of course the entire staff of Belenky Brothers was in on the whole thing. Only Lucette remained in the dark. As soon as we know if our bit in the commercial has avoided the proverbial 'cutting room floor' we'll apprise all our clients. Who knows, Lucette may have a budding career?

REALLY BIG NEWS!

We realize the blog has not been updated recently. There is definitely a very good reason. Belenky personnel have been extremely busy and preoccupied. If you haven't already heard the news- - - Belenky Brothers Gallery has MOVED. It seems many people already know, we were surprised to learn that even Crain's business magazine did an article about our move.

As most of you understand just moving a home is a major ordeal, but moving a business becomes monumental. Every piece of jewelry, displays, furniture, documents, etc. etc. must be packed, labeled and moved. Once in the new space they then must be located and unpacked. Even with all the labeling, it is not easy to retrieve everything exactly when you want it. If I never move again, it will be just fine.

Our new home is 91 GRAND STREET, just off the corner of Greene Street in SoHo. Our website (www.belenky.com) and phone number 212. 674.4242)remain the same. Thankfully it makes it easy to reach us.

Though we are still under construction and sawdust seems to be in every available crevice, we are loving this location. It offers us features we sorely needed. For our clients, it will ultimately present them with many new
options. . .you'll soon see for yourselves.

It's important to mention that we ARE OPEN NOW! Of course our Grand Opening (no pun intended) won't take place until the construction is completed. Then we will have a Grand Opening Gala and official invitation will be issued. Keep a lookout for the exact details. It will also be posted on our website and blog.

"One Of The Five Best Jewelers In NY" is a New York Magazine current headline. Our entire staff is so very thrilled and excited! We just found out that Belenky Brothers has been named one of the FIVE, yes, that's right, FIVE top jewelers in New York by New York Magazine. This was not solicited in any way, nor did we know anything about it. It is truly a wonderful accolade! Though through the years we hear such wonderful remarks from our clients, this is one important additional validation by a non biased source.

The Family Business

Being in a family business all these years definitely brings some benefits. I was recently reminded of one when a long time client visited us. To maintain her anonymity I will call her Tina. Her memories and nostalgia about Belenky Brothers brought smiles to everyone's face.

Last week, Tina brought a new friend with her and as she introduced all of us she had a little anecdote to share with her friend. She mentioned how she had been coming to her family's 'jeweler' since she was a toddler, many, many years ago. She recalled that it had always been a big treat for the family. Usually it was her grandmother who would announce that the following Sunday they would all be taking a car trip to the big city to visit 'her' jeweler. All the kids got excited because it not only meant a trip to Manhattan, but visiting Belenky Brothers was such fun. Children often went home with small gemstones they could bring to school the next day for "Show & Tell". After all they were the only kids who had such 'valuable' stones, and it was all theirs, not their parents'.

The entire family loved going, since once there, the grandmother or Nona, as she was affectionately called, enthusiastically purchased gifts for everyone. Though she often gave the Belenky Brothers' staff the third degree about each item, ultimately she was most generous.

Tina always remembered that when the appointed Sunday would arrive, they were all wearing their best 'going to the city' clothes except the grandmother. On that day shockingly, she would look downtrodden and even shabby. It was very strange, since usually she was fastidious and well groomed. As the years went by no one dared to ask Nona. Once our client became an adult she realized that she still did not know why her grandmother intentionally looked so poorly only on the days she went to buy jewelry. Though she had asked other family members, no one seemed to know the answer. It was as if this secret was buried within the matriarch of the family and not another soul dared step over the line to inquire.

After many yearw, Tina finally mustered up her courage to confront her grandmother . Trepidatiously she asked the long awaited question. Perhaps now, Tina would learn the most puzzling family secret.

Nona, taking no affront and surprised at the question, answered simply. "You don't know? It's so easy, you see, if I wear my good clothing they might think I'm rich. I wouldn't want that." Tina totally shocked by this, and yet finding it quite comical asked. "Nona, after all these years of you buying a huge amount of fine jewelry from these people, do you believe they think you are a poor woman? Do you really think their behavior would change toward you?"

Speaking from another era, Nona replied. "Of course not,- - -but you never can be too careful!"

We love our clients and their stories. This is what makes our business truly a "Family Business" . it's not just that we are a family involved, it's our clients and their families who have been patronizing us for generations. Yes, it's their families that truly make Belenky Brothers a family business.

WHAT A FANTASTIC CONCERT!

The concert last week proved to be extraordinary! The guests were enthralled by the innovative and scintillating compositions performed by Pedro da Silva and Lucia Caruso.

These two gifted musicians thrilled our audience. Each original piece was performed flawlessly, with unbridled passion. Some of our guests traveled great distances to attend. We were thrilled to see friends from as far away as California and Brazil.

The guests were fabulous! They responded by asking for additional encores, which the performers happily obliged. We are delighted to report that the music truly had universal appeal...as you can see in the photo, even the very, very young with discriminating taste attended the concert.

On another topic, please watch our blog and your emails in January. We are planning another reception with a different type of entertainment. It makes us so happy to offer these wonderful performances.

Recently David and Lucette were invited to a concert held at the Argentine Consulate. Though fatigued from a long work day they reluctantly attended. As a result of this phenomenal concert they both were re-energized by enthusiasm and excitement. That evening was the first time they had ever experienced such unique and extraordinarily superb musicians. A young husband and wife duo performing their original and highly innovative compositions captivated the entire audience.

"They were electrifying and spellbinding!" said Lucette.

"We were overwhelmed and totally impressed!" added David.

On an off chance this hot duo would be available they asked if they would be interested in performing at Belenky Brothers' annual holiday gala this year. David and Lucette were thrilled when these "hot" entertainers were ultimately able to confirm the date. Currently on a European performing tour, their initial engagement upon their return will be at the gallery. Our clients will be one of the first to experience the thrill of these musicians.

Though we would love to be able to offer this very thrilling evening to everyone, unfortunately we cannot due to limited space. Admittance is by INVITATION ONLY.

We've Been Busy!

Gee it's been a long time since our last post. Sorry for the delay, but everyone has been so busy. All of us hope you had a great summer and are now beginning to enjoy the crisp Autumn air.

This summer the entire Bloomgarden clan sailed through the Mediterranean Sea, stopping at exciting and exotic ports. Even Riley, the newest Bloomgarden joined the family. She was a little trooper. You should have seen her amidst the ruins of Ephesus in Turkey, or viewing the scenes of Sicily. Though they were ten strong on the ship, the only one everyone seemed to know was Riley. She was such fun!

Seth and his wife Renata joined David and Lucette for several days in Positano prior to the cruise. The Amalfi coast is spectacular, but it's crowning jewel is no doubt Positano. They also spent a day on the magnificent island of Capri just across from Positano.

Seth and David are deep in conversation as they boated through the tourquoise waters around Capri.

Once again they were all impressed with Athens. In the photo below you see Seth and Renata at the Acropolis. No matter how many times one may visit this awesome ruin, it is always fascinating.

Did I say Positano is the 'jewel' of the Amalfi Coast?--- what a segue..."jewel". BELENKY BROTHERS is very thrilled this Fall to be able to offer some extremely unusual designs in jewelry from throughout the world, as well as fabulous and rare gemstones. Belenky Brothers is on the cutting edge of colored gemstones. We have been told that our collection is extraordinary and we are fortunate to have access to the most exotic stones on the planet. Recently we had a top administrator, from one of the giants in the industry, visit Belenky Brothers to learn about just such a rare gemstone. You'll notice the name and a photo of this gem has benn omitted. That is intentional, since few know about it, and it is extremely difficult to obtain, we'd rather it not become public knowledge just yet. Belenky Brothers is thrilled that our country and even our planet has become more "green" contientious. We, too, are striving to become more environmentally aware. After all, this is our world, we are part of it, and we make it what it is. Ultimately we will suffer or benefit form out endeavors. We have become acutely aware that even the smallest changes made can have huge consequences. Consequently, Belenky Brothers has decided to try to become, if not the first, then one of the first "green" jewelry stores. In doing so we have consulted with environmental experts. We are proud that our clientele is hip and cutting edge on world issues, and many of you have already taken the appropriate steps to become "green" We would love to receive additional input from our clients and readers. Please send us your information and suggestions.

To represent our convictions and motivation we have pursued a symbolic course. The word "green" has conjured up some alternative inspiration here at Belenky Brothers. We have amassed a fantastic collection of fine green gemstones to represent our endeavor. As you may already know exotic and rare gems can be found in varying colors. Green also can be seen in varying shades, from a blue green to a yellow green to an almost red green. Nature has provided us many choices. For example you can have a fantastic green tourmaline, or a fine green emerald, or the exciting green Peridots. Even sapphires can come in green. Our collection keeps changing, since everyone has become so excited by our colored gemstones. As a result the collection is always different. ABOVE: A fine speciman of a chorme tourmaline.

Though Seth is a gemologist and David highly knowledgeable in colored stones, new mines are continually being uncovered and new stones becoming increasingly more exciting and valuable. We have a fabulous new stone from Mozambique, whose color ranges from a stunning golden to a magnificent green. It will be our surprise for you when you visit us. We are quite certain you have never heard of this stone before. On the other hand other new mines in Mozambique are yielding many new colors of the fantastic Paraiba Tourmalines. HE DID IT AGAIN!

He's setting a record that most men will have a difficult time beating. Once again David surprised Lucette for her birthday. Of course it didn't compare to Stratford and Judi Dench, but it was special. What a guy!

Over the past few years several of their closest friends have moved out of state. They miss each other a great deal. The friends have returned for visits, but with David and Lucette's busy schedules they have had difficulty getting to visit these people. Without Lucette's knowledge, David arrange to fly her to Florida, stay with these friends and even have an intimate birthday dinner with three other couples.

It turned out to be a wonderful treat and a great respite. There's nothing like being with longtime dear friends. They laughed a lot, talked a lot, swam, shopped, dined, played golf, and relaxed. It was a special birthday for Lucette, and there's more to come in late August which we will share with you on this blog.

We're at it again. As you now know, traveling in search of rare gemstones has become a very important part of our buying trips. It is also one of the more pleasurable aspects of it as well. It's amazing to learn of new mines being discovered which are yielding colored gemstones rarely seen.

In a recent entry we discussed the Paraiba Tourmalines. There is much to know about these unique gemstones and being amidst their collegues in the field Seth and Lucette were able to learn a great deal. More importantly they were able to see and compare some of the most exotic stones in the world. It was all there.

Gemologists are being forced to learn about the new gemstones in a hurry. Belenky Brothers has been fortunate in that we have often been at the forefront in purchasing some of the most unusual stones. We have had the opportunity of acquiring and selling stones before they become cost prohibitive. It all boils down to the old economic principle of supply and demand. As the supply diminishes and demand increases, naturally the price skyrockets. Years ago when few knew about the magnificent neon blue/tourquoise Paraiba Tourmalines from Brazil, we scooped up some of the finest and largest stones available. Today, unfortunately, the Paraiba mine is becoming extinct and large stones are seldomly available, and if they are they are exhorbitant, but extraordinary.

The good news, however is that new mines have been discovered in Mozambique which are yielding Paraiba-like gemstones. Because of the deposits of copper and magnesium these unusual stones of varying colors also present a magnificent neon bright appearance. They are calling them paraiba tourmalines with a lower case"p" rather than the capital "P" signifying the specific area in Brazil. These stones are glorious and not yet as pricey as their Brazilian counterparts.

Because of their excitement and past experiences they chose to bring back a number of unusual and phenomenal gemstones. David is already at work planning his designs. Once you see these amazing gemstones nature has brought into the world, it's difficult not to want to create an exciting piece of jewelry.

This buying trip kept our intrepid buyers busy day and night. They did however, take one evening for themselves. Seth and Lucette went to see "Love" the newest Cirque de Soleil performance adapted to the music of the Beetles. Needless to say, it was incredibly inventive and creative. The music hit a poignant and nostalgic area for both of them. It's interesting how The Beetles cross generational lines.

By the way, it's true what they say about dry heat. The temperature in Las Vegas rose to about 104 degrees. That sounds mighty hot to New Yorkers, but in Vegas it was fine. They walked great distances outside in business attire, and though it was warm, they did report that it was not unbearable.

Yes we are back. We know it's been a long time since we made an entry in the blog, but much has been happening and us kids at Belenky Brothers have been enormously busy. Just to catch you up quickly. We've been traveling in search of even more rare and exotic gemstones. The gorgeous gemstone above is an exotic Mozambique Tourmaline. Also we recently amassed several strands of exquisitely matched emerald beads for necklaces. It is rare to find emeralds of this quality and so evenly matched as well. When gems of this magnitude reach us the excitement is enormous. The quest is a large part of the equation, but the result, when unprecedented, as these beautiful strands were, is hugely fufilling.

Custom design work has become an even larger percentage of our work. We have recently learned from a new client who works for one of the most prestigious jewelry firms in the world, that, as she put it..."everyone at work knows if you want something finely and uniquely designed you go downtown to Belenky Brothers." Wow! That was one of the best compliments we have ever received. Consequently our design department has been working non-stop.

Seth and Lucette will be leaving shortly for the largest jewelry exhibition in America. Many of our clients have given us 'wish lists' for them to obtain. Each year the list grows and gets larger, and even more challenging. Seth and Lucette tell us they actually enjoy shopping the shows even more when they have special requests. Since our reputation for obtaining rare gemstones has grown, the search for these gems has become fascinating. No request is ever turned down. It's fascinating that new mines with never before seen stones are often being unearthed. This makes the colored gemstone field extraordinarily interesting. Using unusual color combinations is making our designs the talk of the town.

And of course, the excitement at work and at home is the birth of David and Lucette's first grandchild, and Seth's niece. Riley Riva Bloomgarden was born April 21, 2007. She's the first girl born to the family in many, many years. It is truly amazing the overwhelming joy a newborn brings!

What A Guy!

David is most definitely in the right business. . .he's the quintessential romantic. Selling engagemnt rings and wedding rings to people in love is right up his alley. This January after many years of marriage he pulled off an amazing surprise for his and Lucette's anniversary. it's thrilling to see the excitement and creativity he dedicated to this project.

Knowing his wife's love of Shakespeare, and that one of the two people she'd most like to meet, is Dame Judi Dench (the other Bill Clinton) he planned a surprise trip to Stratford Upon Avon, England to see Judi Dench at the Royal Shakespeare Theater. The piece de resistance, as if that wasn't enough, is that he had one more huge surprise for his love.

They toured the countryside of England, visited 600 year old pubs, had a private tour of Stonehenge, another at Shakespeare's birthplace, and yet anther at Ann Hathaway's home.

Then it was the night of the Shakespearian play "The Merry Wives of Windsor-The Musical". Before the performance they shared an elegantly romantic dinner, then went to the theater. At the end of the play as they were about to exit the lobby they saw an official looking man holding a sign with their name of it . He politely asked them to follow him through crowds and fans who parted respectfully. As they entered locked and guarded doors, other officials watched with huge smiles on their faces. It was as if everyone knew exactly what was happening. Each door opened when the official mentioned David and Lucette's name. Inside the security guarded stage door another official took over and led ,them through the back stage maze, up stairs, through winding halls, and finally to a dressing room door. The door opened and there stood Dame Judi Dench. With a huge smile on her face she said, "Welcome, and happy anniversary, won't you come in?"

The usually glib Lucette was now speechless, which David laughingly added was a rare occasion. Judi popped bottles of champagne in honor of their anniversary, introduced them to other guests who were now invited into the dressing room. They had been kept waiting so that David and Lucette could have some private time with this extraordianry actress. They spent the better part of an hour with her, and when they were ready to take their leave, Dame Judi embraced and kissed Lucette.

After which another actor in the play offered to take them backstage and even on stage. Lucette was in complete awe that her husband could carve out the time to make all the intricate arrangements. She learned that the entire staff at the theater were privy to what was happening.

Upon their return to the hotel, the manager and David had arranged to have dessert served in front of a warming fire. Instead of the traditional coulis on the plate, written in chocolate were the words "Happy Anniversary". Champagne was sent over to further add to the amazing evening.

Even Dame Judi had sent a message in response to David's letter that she would love to share the celebration of their anniversary. When Lucette shared her experience with family and friends the typical response was...What a guy!

. . .And What A Night It Was!

What a night it was! Belenky Brothers presented the Black Diamond jewelry collection of Catherine Angeil called 'Dangerous', by creating a downtown dangerous evening. Many guests crowded into the gallery to enjoy champagne, hors d'oevres, Burlesque entertainment by world renowned performers, and sheer, unbridled fun! Even the media was in attendance.

Everyone was in a celebratory mood. We laughed and joined in the fun of the Emcee, Murray Hill. One lucky guest even won a one carat black diamond.

This is a truly fun and exciting aspect of being at the gallery. Another is spending time with our clients and friends. I know it sounds somewhat soppy, but on a blog it can be said that our entire staff truly enjoys you all. We look forward to seeing you even more in 2007.
